How the Galaxy Note 8 will keep you from getting burned
The good news: On average, you've got a far greater chance of being struck by lightning than of seeing a battery catastrophically fail. And Samsung's new batteries are likely to be even safer.
What Samsung has done
As we explained last January in a delightful video featuring a creme-filled chocolate cake roll, the reason Samsung's batteries failed was a series of preventable manufacturing errors.
Some of the original batteries weren't quite constructed properly and got a little bit squished, while some of the replacements were missing insulation tape and/or had sharp metal bits that punched through. Either way, the positive and negative sides of the battery were allowed to touch and -- zap! -- they short-circuited, igniting the flammable liquid that lives inside every lithium-ion battery cell.
Mind you, that new safety check was already in place when Samsung started selling the Galaxy S8 in April. But for the new Note 8, the company went a step further. The famous safety standard company Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is now independently testing and certifying the Note 8's battery pack as well.

Amazon.com plans to toss a smart bomb into the fray in U.S / supermarket aisles
price war has raged in U.S. supermarket aisles for well over a year, bloodying retailers big and small. On Monday, Amazon.com plans to toss a smart bomb into the fray.
The online giant's move to slash prices on everything from organic baby kale to fair-trade bananas on the same day its $13.7 billion acquisition of Whole Foods Market Inc. closes showed the "high-velocity decision making" Amazon founder Jeff Bezos claims as his hallmark, and sent shares of Kroger Co., Costco Wholesale Corp. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. reeling Thursday. Amazon will also begin selling Whole Foods' store brands on its site, install Amazon pickup lockers in some locations and meld its Prime program into the upscale grocer's operations

Watch Where the old planes go 'boneyard' send old planes to be scrapped
The “boneyard” is the colloquial term given to aircraft storage facilities where out-of-use planes are sent to be sold, stored or scrapped. Most are in arid locations such as California or Arizona. The one here in New Mexico – officially the Roswell International Air Center – is the preferred facility for American.
The Center’s sprawling grounds sit adjacent to Roswell’s tiny airport terminal, where American is the only carrier currently offering regular scheduled passenger flights – three per day to Dallas/Fort Worth and one to Phoenix.
But it’s the flow of older, retiring jets that are the real lifeblood of the Roswell International Air Center.
Planes can sit indefinitely in storage here, where the dry desert air helps keep the idle aircraft from corroding. Some find second lives, taken in by cargo carriers or by smaller airlines in the developing world. Others face a stark end – raided for parts or scrapped altogether.
Whatever fate awaits, Testorff says, “We take good care of our airplanes out here.”
American isn’t the only carrier to retire its planes to Roswell, one of about a half-dozen such facilities in the United States. Several Boeing 777s from Asian discount carrier Scoot are visible during one recent visit. As is an old Thai Airways Airbus A300 and a Boeing 727 with a long-faded paint job.
There are private aircraft, too, including a red 1962 Lockheed JetStar JT 12-5 that once flew Elvis, according to American’s staff at Roswell.
But most of the planes currently on the ground here have come from American. And for good reason: The airline is phasing out its once-vast fleet of MD-80 and Boeing 757 jets, retiring those older models as part of an aggressive fleet-renewal plan.
The retirement of the MD-80 – long the backbone of American’s domestic fleet – has been especially prolific. The carrier once had more than 370 “Super 80s,” as American refers to them, in its fleet. But they’re scheduled to be phased out by 2017, replaced by modern new Boeing and Airbus jets.
The airline has been sending its MD-80s to the Roswell boneyard since 2003, with the rate increasing in the past two years to about one retirement a week.

Apple and Aetna Aiming to Bring Apple Watch to 23 Million Aetna Subscribers
Apple and Aetna Aiming to Bring Apple Watch to 23 Million Aetna Subscribers
Apple and Aetna are discussing ways to offer discounted Apple Watch models to millions of consumers with Aetna insurance, reports CNBC. Citing people with knowledge of Apple's plans, the site says Apple and Aetna held discussions last week that included senior officials from Apple, Aetna, and several hospitals.
Aetna already offers a program that provides the Apple Watch at no cost to its 50,000 employees and subsidizes the cost for some subscribers, but the insurance company is said to be negotiating with Apple to offer a free or discounted Apple Watch to all Aetna members.
Apple's Myoung Cha, who has the title "special projects, health," led the discussions, said one of the people. The move by Aetna is part of its push to increase customer interest in a healthier lifestyle and a better tracking of diet, said one of the people.
Aetna is said to be aiming to implement some kind of program early in 2018, and its goal seems to be an expansion of plans that were announced back in September. At that time, Aetna said it was planning to subsidize the cost of the Apple Watch for large employers and individual customers.
Aetna also said it would develop several iOS health initiatives with "support" from Apple, offering "deeply integrated" health apps for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch to Aetna customers.
The company's plan to offer discounted or free Apple Watch models to subscribers comes as Apple is on the verge of introducing a third-generation Apple Watch. Rumors suggest the upcoming device features an LTE chip that allows it to be decoupled from the iPhone and there's also a possibility we'll see a redesign.
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Hits AnTuTu With Snapdragon 835
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Hits AnTuTu With Snapdragon 835
A Samsung Electronics-made device bearing the model number SM-N9500 that’s widely believed to be the Galaxy Note 8 appeared in the database of mobile benchmarking tool AnTuTu earlier today, having scored 179,000 points in the overall performance test, with that score indicating that its theoretical computational prowess will be comparable to that of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. The device was listed as featuring the Snapdragon 835, Qualcomm’s latest high-end system-on-chip (SoC) manufactured on the 10nm process node. The same piece of silicon was already found in the Galaxy S8-series models sold in the United States, which is also expected to be the case with the Galaxy Note 8. The international variant of the smartphone is said to feature the Exynos 8895, Samsung’s in-house SoC based on the same process technology, recent reports indicated.
The newly uncovered AnTuTu listing shows the Galaxy Note 8 as having a resolution of 2,220 by 1,080 pixels, which amounts to a Full HD screen with a tall aspect ratio of 18.5:9. The device should also boast QHD support that users will be able to activate manually from its Settings app. The screen of the Galaxy Note 8 should hence be just a slightly larger version of the 6.2-inch Infinity Display featured on the Galaxy S8 Plus, with Samsung’s upcoming phablet being expected to debut with a 6.3-inch panel. The Galaxy Note 8 is also listed by AnTuTu as having 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal flash memory which is likely expandable via a microSD card slot, whereas the smartphone was tested while running Android 7.1.1 Nougat, presumably enhanced with Samsung’s Grace UX. The Galaxy Note 8 is scheduled to be unveiled on August 23 and should hit most markets by late September.

LG V30 might not be the only phone least two versions of the LG V30
LG V30 might not be the only phone least two versions of the LG V30
The LG V30 might not be the only phone unveiled at the company's launch event on August 31. LG may also launch an upgraded variant of the phone called the V30 Plus, reports ETNews citing a high-ranking official for a mobile network provider.
Unlike the iPhone 7 Plus or the Galaxy S8 Plus, LG's Plus model wouldn't be a physical size upgrade to the V30. Instead, the LG V30 Plus would offer different upgrades like more internal storage (128GB instead of 64GB), a different audio system, and wireless charging, according to the report.
This wouldn't be the first LG phone to get a Plus version. LG also revealed the LG G6 Plus months after the release of the LG G6. The G6 Plus offered more storage than the G6 along with other improvements like higher quality audio support, B&O headphones in the box, and additional colors. The G6 Plus may have been an attempt to revitalize interest in the G6, but recently G6 sales haven't been so great.
LG's V series is its most premium phone line, but the company may be switching things up by announcing the LG V30 Plus the same day as the standard V30. According to the report, the V30 and V30 Plus will go on sale September 15 in Korea (LG's home country), which ETNews says is the same day the Galaxy Note 8 releases.
Neither of the V30 phones will be cheap, says the report. The LG V30 is said to cost $700 (about £540 or AU$885) while the LG V30 Plus is claimed to be $875 (about £670 or AU$1105). How will this compare to the Note? We'll find out later this month.

Walmart’s shares have gained 6.55 percent in 3 months / Walmart Beats Amazon
Traditional retailer Walmart is coming back big time. And it is beating on-line retailer Amazon in the last three to six months.
Walmart’s shares have gained 6.55 percent in the last three months and 19.71 percent over the last six months compared to 6.55 percent and 15.67 percent of Amazon.
Source: Finance.yahoo.com 8/10/2017
That’s a big change from a few months ago, when Amazon was the undisputed winner on Wall Street, both on short-term and long-term basis.
John Zolidis, President of Quo Vadis Capital, Inc. attributes Walmart’s strong Wall Street performance to investor enthusiasm over its ability to compete effectively against Amazon, and on US “grocery inflation,” which has helped the performance of traditional retailers, and especially Walmart which relies heavily on grocery sales.
“I believe WMT shares have risen as investors are increasingly optimistic that the company can prove to be an effective competitor to AMZN,” says Zolidis. “In addition, grocery inflation is a huge positive for WMT reported same-store sales. The company has experienced a significant headwind to reported comps due to deflation over the past two years. Grocery prices are now turning higher in several categories which should help reported same-store sales at WMT (and other grocers). Grocery is 55% of WMT U.S. sales. Lastly, retailers have reported better 2Q results, starting with Target which pre-announced comps turning positive and including Kohl's and Macy's which reported this morning. Since WMT had previously been outperforming each of these, it follows that WMT trends likely improved on a sequential basis in the second quarter as well.

100-Year-Old Fruitcake Found in Antarctica Is |Almost Edible
British explorer Robert Falcon Scott likely brought the cake with him to Antarctica, where it's stayed in "excellent condition.
Famously indestructible, a fruitcake has withstood a century in the coldest, windiest, and driest place on Earth.
Conservators with the New Zealand-based Antarctic Heritage Trust recently found the 100-year-old dessert in Antarctica's oldest building, a hut on Cape Adare. (See "Electrifying Photos of the Early Age of Antarctic Exploration.")
Wrapped in paper and the remains of a tin, the fruitcake is in "excellent condition," according to the trust, and looks and smells almost edible.
British explorer Robert Falcon Scott likely brought the cake, made by the British biscuit company Huntley & Palmers, to Antarctica during their 1910-1913 Terra Nova expedition. (See photos: "Antarctic 'Time Capsule' Hut Revealed.
The expedition's Northern Party took shelter in the Cape Adare hut, which had been built by Norwegian Carsten Borchgrevink’s team in 1899and left the fruitcake behind. A team has been excavating artifacts in the hut since 2016.
"Fruitcake was a popular item in English society at the time, and it remains popular today," Lizzie Meek, conservation manager for artifacts at the trust, says via email.
Scott and his four-person crew reached the South Pole in 1912, but all five died on the return journey to their expedition base, the Terra Nova hut on Cape Evans. (See "Rare Pictures: Scott's South Pole Expedition, 100 Years Later.")
Heritage Trust conservators have restored the 50-foot-long Terra Nova hut, the largest Antarctic building of its time, and several other portable wooden huts to look as they did a century ago.
After restoring the huts' artifacts—including the fruitcake—conservators return them to their original locations within the huts.
"Fruitcake is not something that people usually get excited about, but this discovery shows what a spectacular environment for historic preservation the Antarctic is," Clemson University historian Stephanie Barczewski said via email.

A tornado blasted through Salisbury tornado flips cars, mows down trees
Dramatic video has emerged of the tornado that blew through Salisbury, Md., on Monday around 1:40 p.m. The tornado overturned three cars, downed trees and damaged buildings. No serious injuries were reported.
In the video above, a security camera at Hopper’s Tap House captures a car cartwheeling from the parking lot into a roadway, carried by the storm’s violent winds
Storm eyewitness Edward Scheitlin Jr. was driving along South Salisbury Boulevard when the storm was underway and decided to start recording. At the beginning of his video (below), Scheitlin Jr. captured the storm’s funnel and also a transformer exploding as it passes.
For the second time in two weeks, a tornado formed in eastern Maryland. The first one struck along the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay and was rated an EF2 (on a scale of zero to five). Monday’s damaging storm, which was rated an EF1, unfolded in Salisbury, Md., just south of the Delaware state line.
Both storms developed in a similar type of severe thunderstorm environment. The meteorology is complex but fascinating. Let’s take a closer look at Monday’s storm.
The shortwave also created large regions of spin at different levels in the atmosphere (the spin covers much larger regions than single thunderstorm cells; do not conflate with a mesocyclone), and a basic tenet of atmospheric dynamics states that this situation can induce air to rise.
Tuesday’s storms over the Eastern Shore were subject to very strong “dynamic lift,” and the intensity of jet stream spin is denoted by levels of green shading in the image.

Flattening The Post-Pregnancy Belly In 10 Minutes Of Daily Exercise
watch Flattening The Post-Pregnancy Belly In 10 Minutes Of Daily Exercise
I admit it. I have a "mummy tummy," also known as "mommy pooch." You know, that soft, jelly belly you retain after having a baby — it makes you look a few months pregnant.
I've tried to convince myself that the pooch is a valiant badge of motherhood, but who am I kidding? The pooch bothers me. And it turns out it's been causing me back pain
So when I hear that a fitness coach and doctor have come up with a technique that can flatten the pooch quickly and easily, I think, "Why not?"
A few weeks, later I'm rolling out a yoga mat with a dozen other moms and pregnant women in San Francisco.
We will see a dramatic change," says Leah Keller, who leads the class. "You can easily expect to see 2 inches off your waist in three weeks of time," Keller says. "That's not an unrealistic expectation
A doctor at Weill Cornell and I did a study on the exact same program we're going to do," Keller says. "And we found 100 percent of women achieved full resolution
A hernia may require surgery. Sharma says. "So I will refer patients to a general surgeon to have a C.T. scan if there's really a true concern about a hernia."
Diastasis recti arises during pregnancy because the growing fetus pushes the abdominal muscles apart — specifically the rectus abdominal muscles
We did a pilot study to see if the method is helpful for women," Sharma says.
The study was small — just 63 women. But the results were quite promising. After 12 weeks of doing Keller's exercise — 10 minutes a day — all the women had fixed their diastasis recti, Sharma and Keller reported at ACOG's annual meeting few years ago.
We had patients that were even one year out from giving birth, and they still had such great benefit from the exercises," Sharma says. "We love to see that there is something we can do to help women

50 bikers escort bullied boy to first day of middle school | what is the reason
Eleven-year-old Phil Mick was nervous to start his first day of sixth grade.
According to his mom, Tammy Mick of Auburn, Indiana, Phil had confessed that he didn't want to return to class after being bullied during his final year of elementary school.
"He was hiding it," Tammy Mick told ABC News. "He came home with bumps and bruises. He said he wanted to end his life and I stepped up as parent and tried to get things taken care of."
On Tuesday, Phil showed up for class with 50 bikers on motorcycles behind him.
Brent Warfield, sales manager of KDZ Motorcycle Sales & Service and a mutual friend of the Mick family, decided to step in and help after hearing about Phil's situation.
"I met Phil and I met Tammy and she had told be about him getting bullied," Warfield told ABC News. "I said, 'Well next year get a hold of me and we can give him an escorted ride to school.
When you hear an 11-year-old-kid talking about getting kicked and picked on all because they don't have as much money or wear nice clothes, being overweight and then having an 11-year-old son myself, it reached down deep and hit me," he said.
Warfield put a call out on Facebook for bikers to join him in escorting Phil to school on Aug. 1.
That morning, a total of 50 bikers arrived at Phil's house, bringing with them new clothes and school supplies, Warfield said.
"It gave him confidence," he explained. "The middle school is a fresh start for him. I've talked to him several days since. He goes to school happy, comes home happy
Mick said the special day left her son ecstatic.
“I wanted to cry, it was so heartwarming," she added. "Every day, he talks about that ride. He said it was amazing. [To] Brent and all the riders who came, from the bottom of my heart, I want to thank them. They made my son very happy
