First look / 2018 Jeep Wrangler adds capability / loses weight

The all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler checks every box on its fans’ list, and adds a few that haven’t occurred to them yet.

It’s got more room, but a shorter turning radius key to enthusiasts’ off-road adventures and everybody else’s parking lot maneuvers. The legendary SUV’s crawl ratio, important to slogging through deep mud and stand, increases from its already impressive 73:1 to a ridiculous 84:1. The soft-top is easier to remove and promises to be quieter on the road. A diesel will be available. Fuel economy rises while weight falls, thanks in part to  aluminum doors, front fenders and hood and a magnesium tailgate.

If that’s not enough, a mild-hybrid powertrain combines a new high-output turbocharged engine with 48-volt electric power to improve performance and fuel economy. An eight-speed automatic transmission is available with all engines.
