A new wildfire, the Laguna Fire, was reported Thursday morning in Ventura County. According to the Ventura County Fire Department, the fire ignited near Laguna Road in the Oxnard plains, quickly spreading through brush.

Southern California Faces Persistent Wildfire Threats

Dangerous fire conditions continue to threaten Southern California as new wildfires emerge. FOX News Chief Correspondent Jonathan Hunt reported from Castaic on Thursday morning, where crews are battling multiple fires, including the rapidly expanding Hughes Fire.

The Hughes Fire exploded to over 10,000 acres within hours, while critical fire conditions persist across the region. Fire Weather Warnings remain in effect through Friday, though upcoming rain could provide relief while raising concerns of mudslides in burn-scarred areas.

Laguna Fire Prompts Evacuations

The Laguna Fire, located near Camarillo, prompted immediate evacuations at Cal State University Channel Islands. The Ventura County Fire Department reported aggressive firefighting efforts from the ground and air to combat the fast-moving flames.

In an emergency alert, university officials urged:

“A fire has been reported on Round Mountain/Sat’wiwa, and the campus has been ordered to evacuate. Please proceed to evacuate the campus and University Glen/Ancapa Canyon immediately.”

Sepulveda Fire Contained, Hughes Fire Challenges Crews

Meanwhile, the Sepulveda Fire broke out near North Sepulveda Boulevard and the 405 Freeway but was quickly contained by the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). No structures were damaged, and no injuries were reported.

In contrast, the Hughes Fire continues to challenge firefighters. The blaze erupted near Castaic Lake in Los Angeles County on Wednesday, consuming over 10,000 acres by early Thursday. Evacuation warnings impacted more than 50,000 residents, with schools like North Lake Elementary evacuating students to safe locations.

Firefighters have managed to prevent the Hughes Fire from reaching critical infrastructure, including Elderberry Canyon and the Castaic Hydroelectric Power Plant. Crews remain focused on containment efforts as they work to protect the surrounding communities.

Rain Forecasted Amid Ongoing Fire Risks

Much-needed rain is expected over the weekend, offering potential relief to wildfire-ravaged areas. However, fire officials remain cautious as burn scars increase the risk of mudslides. Southern California remains on high alert as firefighters continue their relentless efforts to contain the flames.
