RUSSELL, Ky. — Susan G. Komen Kentucky has awarded $30,000 to provide for the breast health needs of women in Bon Secours Kentucky Health System’s (BSKHS) service area.
The grant, received by the Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital (OLBH) Foundation, will support the health system’s Women’s Health Breast Cancer Project, which aims to serve a minimum of 500 economically challenged and medically under served women in Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Greenup, Lawrence and Lewis counties in Kentucky.
Women will be provided with breast cancer education, screenings, health navigation and personal care services. The funds received from Komen will also provide free mammography screenings, diagnostic testing, breast ultrasounds and, for those with breast cancer and personal care items.
Beth Wilson, breast coordinator at the OLBH Women’s Center, said to many women in the local go without care that could prevent health problems because they cannot pay.
“To many local women go without proper prevention and health care services due to their inability to pay,” Wilson said. “Thanks to the generosity of Susan G. Komen Kentucky, we have funding to support screening and diagnostic services to help those women who qualify.”
Kevin Compton Communications & Advocacy Specialist of BSKHS, said the Komen grant helps to eradicate financial barriers.
“The monies from Komen allow us to fight breast cancer in our region by eliminating the financial barriers that cause some women to either delay or forgo their mammograms,” Compton said.
Susan G. Komen is the world’s largest breast cancer organization, funding more breast cancer research than any other nonprofit while providing real-time help to those facing the disease. Since its founding in 1982, Komen has funded more than $889 million in research and provided $1.95 billion in funding to screening, education, treatment and psychosocial support programs serving millions of people in more than 30 countries worldwide. Komen was founded by Nancy G. Brinker, who promised her sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would end the disease that claimed Suzy’s life. The Kentucky Affiliate has contributed more than $10.7 million for breast health education, screening and treatment support programs and more than $3.7 million to breast cancer research.
