MINUTE'S APPLAUSE FOR 1966 WORLD CUP HEROES
Fifty years ago this summer, England won the World Cup on home soil to become world champions. To mark the occasion, several members of the triumphant 1966 World Cup squad are back at Wembley on Sunday, when Manchester United face Leicester City in the Community Shield.
Among the heroes of '66 were Reds stars Sir Bobby Charlton, Nobby Stiles and the late John Connelly; the former two played in the 4-2 win over West Germany after extra time in the final.
To honour the players’ achievement, the FA is encouraging every fan to take part in a minute’s applause when the stadium clock ticks to 66 in the second half, to show appreciation to the squad of players who brought back football’s ultimate prize to England 50 years ago.
Two of the victorious '66 players also faced each other at Wembley in the 1963 FA Cup final, when United also played Leicester – Sir Bobby and Foxes goalkeeper Gordon Banks. They will be the guests of honour in the pre-match presentation party on Sunday.
Other 1966 players attending the match are Jimmy Armfield, George Cohen, Ron Flowers, Roger Hunt and Sir Geoff Hurst, while several other players will be represented by their families.
