Tasmanian artist Max Angus dies at 102
Tasmanian artist Max Angus dies at 102
He passed away this week.
Angus was best known for his watercolour landscapes depicting locations like Lake Pedder in the state's south-west.
From a young age, Angus felt comfortable with a paintbrush in his hand.
His father was a house painter and decorator who brought home wallpaper scraps for his son to sketch on
By 1931, the teenage artist was working as a sign writer and studying art at the Hobart Technical College.
In 1978, he was awarded the Order of Australia.
A decade later he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in London.
It was not until 2006 that he had his first solo exhibition at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.
He was one of the first to receive the Tasmanian Government art award the following year.
"I'm overwhelmed, I think everybody that's got their name on this list this morning would feel the same," he said.
A humble Tasmanian whose work will be remembered for generations.
