sea of silver sparkling | in final public event for the charity
A humble netball court in the centre of Canberra was transformed into a sparkling sea of silver, after thousands of people donated millions of five-cent coins to raise money for Connie Johnson’s Love Your Sister charity.
The Big Heart Project is the Canberra mum’s final public event for the charity which was set up her brother – gold Logie winner Samuel Johnson.
Together, the pair has been working tirelessly to raise funds for breast cancer after Connie was diagnosed with the disease.
On Wednesday, thousands lined the Lyneham netball courts to toss five cent pieces high into the air to fill out the heart.
The original aim was to break the record for the longest line of coins, but they quickly changed that to creating the heart after they were inundated with donations.
The goal was $1 million – over $2 million has been raised.
“I’ve never felt so much love in my life,” Connie told the Canberra Times.
Everyone who is here is here for love, for passion, a cure. There’s sadness, there’s celebration
Connie has ceased treatment for her cancer and will now step back from the charity to spend time with her two young boys, her partner and of course her brother.
“I am hoping that without the chemo in my system that I might have a bit of a boost for a little while, feel a little better before the cancer takes over and in that time I just want to be a mum,” she said.
The money raised from Wednesday’s event will go to the Garvan Institute into breast cancer research and other research projects for other cancers.
